Yesterday at Gracepoint Berkeley, we commissioned the team members who are going out to the three church plants in Minneapolis, Riverside, and San Diego to reach out to the campuses in those cities. It was a very meaningful moment as we once again embraced the vision of Gracepoint: “An Acts 2 Church in Every College Town.”
Here is the video of the team members shared about their own experience here at Gracepoint as well as what they’d hope to replicate in the new church plants.
I really enjoyed this sharing. It was good to match some of the faces with names, too.
This was such a blessing and challenge to watch. I am so excited to see how God will work on and through us. A special thanks to the video people who spent hours creating it.
Watching this video in Austin along with the rest of the congregation here really impacted me this past Sunday as we Skyped into the service at Berkeley. As one of the students that made a decision to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at Gracepoint Austin’s first Winter Retreat, I am so glad that there are brothers and sisters in Christ like the ones in this video who are willing as Jesus says in today’s DT text to leave “home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel” (Mark 10:29).
I personally know and can attest to that without the willingness of the brother and sister staff here in Austin to leave behind family and friends back in California for the sake of the Gospel that I would not have come to know and accept Christ’s amazing love for me. Watching this video reminded me again to praise God for leading each of the staff who are here in Austin and who are going to the Minnesota, Riverside, and San Diego to leave behind much in order to serve as harvest workers sharing God’s love with college students. I eagerly look forward to all that God will do through the staff in this video who have surrendered themselves to the call of Jesus to spread the Gospel!
God willing in a couple of years I can meet new brothers and sisters in Christ at the Thanksgiving Retreat from Minnesota, Riverside, and San Diego (and beyond!)
[...] This past week’s commissioning service for our 48 church plant team members went by so quickly, I wanted to recap a bit so that we can all be blessed again through all that we experienced together. I wanted to encourage everyone to just watch that “Hole” video again (a description of why we call it that below). It’s here at Gracepoint Video. [...]
It was so amazing to see how God has transformed the lives of our church plant team members over the years. Surely, if people had asked any of them years ago whether they thought that they would be ready to go on a church plant, most, if not all would have found it improbable. Some could have even found it laughable, but truly, “With man this [transformed lives] is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” As they leave, they will truly leave holes behind–not just in terms of their skills, but more importantly, in terms of their spiritual presence. As they fill those holes and form another Acts 2 community in a college town in the US, it is my prayer and challenge that we corporately and personally rise up, mature and fill in those holes left behind back here as part of the sending church community.
I’m really thankful for the commissioning service! One point I will remember from Romans 16 is the importance of working hard and how working hard can bring us closer as a church! Thank you for working so hard on this video!!
The video was pretty awesome for me because I realized I was the recipient of the same things that every one of these members are! What a blessing it has been to try to make myself available to God and thus experiencing Him opening the floodgates of blessing. Whenever I feel tired or self-congratulatory, I just need to step back and see how full my life is of God’s grace of people, purpose, and hope.
I was deeply moved at the sight of the team singing “Send Me!”, especially seeing my peers up there. A flood of memories came over me as I thought about our undergrad years, and how God has shaped and molded them to this day where “Here am I, send me!” is their heart’s cry. It was a testament to how God has indeed worked in amazing ways as I thought back to how we were a bunch of shallow churched guys who lacked vision for our lives. I was amazed again that this is the God we get to serve and give our lives for.
The entire service re-kindled many emotions of excitement and nervousness I felt upon getting ready to move out to Austin. i’m so excited for these 48 brothers and sisters who are taking this step to obey God’s call to be His hands and feet in each of these campuses. i know they will experience a lot as they depend on Him to do the work of salvation.
Personally i was reminded again and recommitted to live a life of daily surrender because there is still so much more Kingdom work left to be done – so many who have yet to hear the Good News of the gospel. also, whether i’m the one being sent out or sending, I need to be mission-minded _wherever_ i am because it’s not about the greatness of Gracepoint per se, but rather, the glory of God that needs to be revealed throughout the world.
It was great to match the names of those who joined the team from Davis with faces through the video. I was personally challenged and was spurred on by the sharing of each members and what they hoped to replicate at the new church plant. It made me to think about how I am doing in my personal worship, spiritual growth and my role in preserving the values here at Berkeley so that we can continue to send out teams of church planters. Praise God for His faithfulness!
I was really impacted by the various images of Davis campus as I remember how over 10 years ago some very young couples came to Davis to leave behind their friends and close community in order to plant a church in Davis. Because of that I’m here and have learned and experienced God’s forgiveness and grace. Now there are people who are going to go out from here to build a special community that seeks to love God and love others and I’m very proud to be a part of a body that does that.
As I saw each of the bros and sis who had decided to be part of the church plants on the stage, I just teared up. I remember many of them their freshmen year very very far from God – and now – they are people I get inspired by, respect and love as my co-laborers in Christ. Only God! I commit to praying for them and running this race with them with more umph here or anywhere God calls me.
I was personally just really hit by the testimonies of these brothers and sisters. It was so amazing, knowing some of them personally, how God has transformed their lives so that now they were standing on that stage, committed to go in faith. I was amazed that despite our sin and inadequacies, all God requires of us is to say Here am I or I will go. Really, it’s about God’s power and the church and not about our own individual cans and cannots.
As I was hearing the testimonies in the video, I was impacted by how God transforms lives. It was a group of ordinary people who experienced Jesus (Acts 4:13). I know that what was present on the video was not the full story. There have been countless people praying for each of them, behind the scenes, since they’ve come to our church. God answers prayers! I pray that we will share the message of God’s transforming power to the three campuses and many more in the years to come.
so moving to see my leaders, co-workers and younger brothers and sisters in Christ saying and singing to God, “Send me!”, and spurred me on to that much more serve wholeheartedly where I am and where God sends me.
When the church planting teams went up on stage to sing the special song “Send Me,” I couldn’t believe how many of them I had personal relationships with. So many of the church planters have impacted and shaped me in some significant way. Though I’m sad they will be departing soon, I am thankful for the memories we’ve shared and look forward to how God will use them to impact the lives of the many others they will meet in their new homes.
Walking into the commissioning service and seeing the flyers on chairs, the 48 people on stage, hearing their testimonies, and watching the “Till the Whole World Hears” slides of different campuses — it struck me afresh what our church is about, and has been about. Our new vision statement, “An Acts 2 church in every college town” is not all that new, because it captures what our church has been about all these years. But the commissioning service fired up my heart with this vision God gave our church and made me think, “Wow, we’re actually doing this!”
