Augmented Reality Videos: Topps and iPhone App

Augmented reality  is one of the latest tech innovations that’s beginning to be more prevalent. Augmented reality is the blending of the real world and virtual reality, usually taking the form of computer graphics superimposed on top of live footage from a web cam or a cell phone camera. OK, if that explanation didn’t help you at all, take a look at these videos.

Here is an advertisement for Topps baseball cards, where they have incorporated augmented reality to make baseball cards come alive. When you put a special “code card” in front of the web cam, you see not only yourself on the screen, but a 3-D baseball player shows up on the card you are holding, and you can use the keyboard to control the behavior of this 3-D player.

Here’s an iPhone app based on this concept. Using the video function of the phone, the Nearest Tube Augmented Reality app displays information about the New York subway system, showing arrows indicating where each subway line is going and where the nearest stations are. Still looks a bit raw and there is room for improvement, but similar apps have started to appear showing where people are twittering from, where the nearest apartments for rents are, etc. This is definitely a technology that has a lot of potential to make information available in a powerful way.

Thanks for putting up this video. I heard about this on NPR, where doritos is using the technology to play live rock concerts.
